Your Wish Is My Command is the story of three people who are navigating a world where wishes are literally for sale. Mired as they are in bureaucracy and the familiar prejudices of our world, the wishes that are more expensive are more likely to work as intended.

Three wishes sold at an unassuming kiosk in Cairo link Aziza, Nour, and Shokry, changing their perspectives as well as their lives. Aziza learned early that life can be hard, but when she loses her husband and manages to procure a wish, she finds herself fighting unreasonable regulation and inequality for the right to have - and make - that wish. Nour is a privileged college student who secretly struggles with depression and must decide whether to use their wish to try to “fix” this depression. And, finally, Shokry must grapple with his religious convictions as he decides how to help a friend who doesn’t want to use her wish.

Although their stories are fantastical, each of these people wrestles with the very real challenge of trying to make their most deeply held desires come true.

Deena Mohamed is an Egyptian designer, illustrator, and writer. She first began making comics at age eighteen, when she created the viral webcomic Qahera. Originally published as Shubeik Lubeik in Arabic in Egypt, Your Wish Is My Command was awarded the Best Graphic Novel prize and the Grand Prize at the 2017 Cairo Comic Festival. She lives and works in Cairo, Egypt.*

Albumi pitää sisällään kolme osaa, jotka linkittyvät toisiinsa kehyskertomuksen kautta. Shokry on mies, joka pyörittää pientä kioskia. Toisessa osassa nuori Nour hankkii toiveen. Hän taas päätyy pohtimaan toiveen käyttämisen eettisiä puolia ja sitä, voisiko hän selvitä sittenkin ilman sitä. Mutta maailma ja sen taakat painavat päälle, eikä elämä ole helppoa hänellekään.

Kolmannessa osassa Shokryn tarina selviää vähän paremmin, kuin myös kioskilla vierailevan mummelin. Miten käy tälle kolmannelle toiveelle?

Kehyskertomus on kuvitettu ja väritetty hienosti. Itse "osat" taas ovat hyvää mustavalkoista jälkeä. Kunkin osan yhteyteen on myös selvitetty toivomusten "käytön perusteita". Tässä maailmassa nimittäin toiveita voi ostaa ja niillä on omat ohjeensa ja toimintatapansa.
